Northwest Airlines, Inc.

Northwest currently holds exemption authority issued by the Department authorizing Northwest to engage in the scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property and mail between a point or points in the United States via intermediate points to a point or points in Portugal and beyond. This exemption authority was granted in Docket OST-00-6776 by Notice of Action Taken dated January 24, 2000. Pursuant to it existing exemption authority, Northwest currently provides codeshare service between the United States and Portugal. Northwest proposes to continue to offer scheduled service in that market and in such other U.S.-Portugal markets as Northwest may choose to enter. Granting this Application will benefit the traveling and shipping public. The authority requested is fully consistent with the broad rights available to U.S. carriers under the U.S.-Portugal open skies air services agreement, reached on December 22, 1999. Northwest already provides scheduled service between the United States and Portugal pursuant to its existing exemption authority granted in Docket OST-00-6776. The certificate authority requested herein will enable Northwest to continue to provide those services.
